Judds Reunion? Wynonna Says Let the Fans Decide
AOL The Boot - Gayle Richardson Photo Credit - Aaron Crisler
Celebrating an illustrious 25 years in country music, Wynonna was all smiles as she performed with her mom, Naomi Judd, Saturday night in front of more than 40,000 fans at the CMA Music Fest. Aware of the monumental task of condensing a quarter-century of songs into one short set, Wynonna deferred to one of her own musical idol's suggestions. "The best advice I ever got was from Bono. He said, 'Give them what they want.' The fans love the hits. So we had to condense the Judds' 25-year history into 20 minutes."
Saturday night's performance was a rare reunion but not an isolated one. Already discussing the possibility of a new Judds record, Wynonna is letting fans take the lead on that decision . "It's sort of like one day at a time, one lifetime at a time," Wynonna said backstage at Music Fest. "If the fans ask for it, we will consider it."
Naomi may need a bit more convincing. After performing together last year, she admitted she had mixed emotions about the possibility. "It's a very unreal sensation because on one hand, it feels like we're still together. I feel like I should be getting ready to do a show tonight. On the other hand, I'm so stinking proud that she has this marvelous solo career."
Reunion talk aside, both Judds are currently thriving in their independent careers. Naomi will once again appear as a judge on CMT's 'Can You Duet' reality talent show, while Wynonna is busy touring to promote her album, 'Sing: Chapter 1,' as well as acting as a spokesperson for the weight-loss drug alli.

HEIDI NEWFIELD
Where's a ShamWow when you need it?
The USA Today
Heidi Newfield used CMA Fest to signal Thursday's launch of her fan club. "I wanted to wait until I got on my feet and really got some music out there that people recognized, and to make it a little bit more special," she says. But even though she's fairly new to the solo artist thing (she's formerly of Trick Pony), she's got years of experience with the autograph pen and a quick answer to the most difficult surface on which to leave her mark.
"A sweaty head is the hardest thing to sign," Newfield says. "Sharpie just won't stay on a sweaty, shaved head."

STAR DE AZLAN
Star DeAzlan Interview
www.todayscountrymag.com
Star DeAzlan has been making a name for herself in the country music world by being involved with unique marketing, spreading herself into outlets like TV, and of course putting out great music. Her current single “Like A Rose” is making its way up the Texas charts and while she was in town for CMA Fest we had a chance to catch up with her to talk about the single, her work with NASCAR, her Hispanic background, and much much more.
Star DeAzlan Myspace
1. CMA Fest truly begins tomorrow, June 11. Why did you decide to take part in this year’s CMA Fest?
I think it is pretty important especially for the fans and media to get to be a part of what we are doing. We have so many interviews lined up this week and it is really important to promote ourselves and network with people. We also have a new single out called “Like A Rose” so we are here promoting that. So we are here for a bunch of reasons, but mainly to just have fun and promote our music.
2. How do you think being a part of something this big benefits an up and coming artist like yourself the most?
Meeting with all of the fans is the biggest thing for new artists and this is our chance to do that all at once.
3. Your current single is “Like A Rose.” What can you tell people about this song that may not have heard it?
It is a song that I wrote; actually it is one of the first songs I ever wrote. It’s about a girl and in the Hispanic world we have what we call a kinsenyeta and it is a great father/daughter dance for things like that. It has that kind of background and it also has a Spanish version. We released it in Texas and it went top 20 which was good for us.
4. Why did you choose this as a song to represent you and your music?
When I got signed to Curb Records all of my music had a Texas sound and the vocals are really raw and who I am. So, we wanted to keep everything very real and this song really represents me and who I am and we wanted to present that to our audience
5. You are currently shopping it to the Texas market. Why did you decide to shop it to Texas first and what have you been able to accomplish with it so far?
We tried our luck nationally with “She’s Pretty,” and it did pretty well but a lot of stations said it was too country for country radio. We really didn’t understand that so after digesting that for a while we were like well what do we do about it. We decided to do Texas because I felt that I made the jump from Texas to Nashville pretty quickly so I wanted to give something special to the Texas fans being from there and let them know I am still a hometown girl.
6. Besides the single, which one song of yours do you feel best represents your music and why?
Every song is different lyrically and musically. I would say though that “Like A Rose” is really the best to represent my music. It has simple, but meaningful lyrics and the music is somewhat traditional like my influences. It is also the song that I very first wrote so it really represents what I am trying to do and where I come from.
7. Your heritage includes a Hispanic background, not something the country music world sees a lot of. How important is it for you to put your heritage out there a bit in a market where it isn’t out there all that much?
It’s pretty important to me. I am a country singer but I did grow up singing mariachi music as well so I had Hispanic roots, but I was a country girl in Texas too. I have roots in both and would love to take advantage of that and for people to see that and come into my world for a little while. I am the first Hispanic female artist signed by a major country music label and that was a big step for us, but hopefully we could get recognized on a huge level. Hispanic people are very proud of their heritage and anyone that they can look up to.
8. You have also been involved with NASCAR’s diversity program. Obviously NASCAR is a huge outlet with tremendous fans, but for those that haven’t heard of the diversity program, can you tell people about it?
We actually just went to the truck race last weekend and had a truck in the race. We started first and ended sixth so we got a lot of exposure with that. We want to try to bring the Hispanic fans to NASCAR with this program and get them more involved with NASCAR. It is a big country sport, and I guess if I could say it, “redneck” sport, but we want to have those Mexican rednecks coming too. We want to bring a bigger fan base to the sport.
9. What piece of advice can you offer to someone that is looking to break into the music industry?
Not to give up in the hardest times. I started when I was 11 and I’m 24 now and just got signed 2 years ago, so it doesn’t happen overnight. So just be persistent, keep pursuing your dreams, don’t look back, keep your head up, and work harder everyday.

RODNEY ATKINS
Atkins brings more country to main stage
Steamboat Days continues to tap the country music vein tonight with Nashville heartthrob Rodney Atkins.
Atkins is a good example of someone who writes believably about painful growing experiences simply because he's writing about his own encounters with pain merchants. His life began as a sick baby who was adopted and returned by people who did not want him.
But don't worry: Atkins writes about adult themes, and a mainstay of country music is that of being dumped and drinking to forget. "If You're Going Through Hell" from the album of the same name, for example, handles the pain of rejection issue -- for guys, anyway -- quite well:
"Use the needle of your compass,
"To sew up your broken heart,
"Ask directions from a genie,
"In a bottle of Jim Beam,
"And she lies to you."
Yeah, she does, do that, don't she, boys?
True to great country songs, this ends with a glimmer of hope instead of the rumblings of doom.
Atkins does not step into the simpering slop that so many successful songwriters wallow in and has a somewhat quirky way of approaching things. This is part of his appeal.
Take the ominously titled "Cleaning This Gun," which is about a grown man remembering his first encounter with a girl's father. The father gives the boy a little grilling before saying, "Y'all go out and have some fun," but it's a little chilling when he mentions to the lad that he'll "probably be up all night, still cleanin' this gun."
Then there's "Man on a Tractor," which Atkins describes as an amazing classic country song. We like metaphor in lyrics, and this is tasty:
"The tractor hummed on like a part of a song that you sing to your children at night."
Expect a highly-tuned professional Nashville presentation band behind Atkins. And like Wednesday night's Pat Green, this show will be upbeat and will have far more smiles than frowns -- but it will be much less rock-oriented than Green.
On the southside, Jerad Harnes and the Martini Time Cowboys start the evening with some scorching country music featuring guitarist Clay Huston, who blazes away at speeds beyond the scope of imagination. Following the main show is Nashville's Tin Horse Band, fronted by three women who are as talented and entertaining as the Dixie Chicks, and you don't have to burn their albums.
The weather? After a smoking hot day, the waterfront will cool down with a brief shower before Atkins comes on. The mayflies continue to deceive us with the illusion that they no longer exist.

LEE BRICE
For fans lucky enough to be in attendance at this year's CMA Music Fest they had multiple chances to hang out with Lee as well as catch his live show. Lee signed autographs in the Chevy Booth for about an hour and the Microsoft Booth for another hour. He also played around with the digital jukebox. Lee signed for about 150 people including two SUPER FANS who drive all the way from Iowa to see him! Lee later mentioned, "It is that sort of fan dedication that makes me love what I do!".....

WYNONNA
Wynonna Considers New Duet Partners Great American Country The Judds reunited on stage during Saturday’s CMA Music Festival concert at Nashville’s LP Field in an emotional procession that left Naomi Judd dabbing at tears after an enthusiastic response from more than 40,000 fans. Naomi was forced to retire from regular performing after an early-‘90s bout with hepatitis C. Though she’s been cured, she’s never returned to her old routine. Who might Wynonna be willing to sing with in her mom’s absence? During CNN’s "Larry King Live," Larry asked about teenager Miley Cyrus as a possible duet partner, which left Wy noncommittal. "I would have to think about that one," she responded. "In my opinion, I don't care how successful you are and how much money you have and how many records you are selling, it has to make sense musically. I will tell you this, I'm supposed to talk to Tony Bennett in the next couple of days. Can we talk? I'm in that place, where I'm looking ahead and going, ‘OK, let's not forget Tony Bennett.’ Miley is important and she lives like five miles from me. If she called me, I would have her come to my house and do some chores, and then think about singing with her." Tony Bennett would be a no-brainer for Wy, whose latest album, Sing: Chapter 1, features remakes of songs originated by Nat "King" Cole, Tammy Wynette and Dionne Warwick. "Could you imagine?" Wy said. "I cried. I got the message from my manager and she said, ‘Tony would love to sing with you.’ I seriously started to cry. I said this is like a tabernacle thing. We have to not forget that Tony Bennett is the greatest." This year is the 25th anniversary of the Judds’ first No. 1 hit. "Mama He’s Crazy" reached No. 1 in Billboard on Aug. 4, 1984. Wynonna Writes A Letter to Her Friends My Dearest Friends, When I selected alli to be a part of my program, the fact that it was FDA approved was a deciding factor for me. In fact, alli is the only weight loss product you can buy over the counter that has been approved by the FDA. As the daughter of a nurse, that is incredibly important to me, and I can imagine that it’s important to you too. With my recent 45th birthday, I am excited to report that my program is progressing well, one day at a time. With each step I feel healthier and more peaceful. I have more energy and am sleeping better too, so I feel less tired. My cholesterol is the lowest it has been since I was in my twenties (!), and I’ve noticed that back pain from a horseback riding accident in 1993 has decreased – that’s because now I’m able to do more core muscle work. They call alli “a pill with a plan” and that is exactly how it works. While on the program, I have really begun to change my lifestyle. I am more physically active and I am making healthier food choices. I am enjoying being with my family and friends more. I made a promise to myself when I started taking alli that I would not get so determined that I had to lose a certain amount of weight, so I am making sure to stick to my mantra - “just for today, I'm going to allow myself to make healthier choices” – and enjoy the new, healthier me. In the process, I’m making healthy choices for my children, too. I feel that I am finally beginning to fully embrace the concept that this truly is a journey and not a destination, and my "progress not perfection" approach is really paying off. I am enjoying the alli program more and more and I can honestly say for the first time in a long time, I am rediscovering how to live in the present and am concentrating again on living for today and not worrying about tomorrow. alli has taught me that "it works if you work it and I'm worth it" and that is the gift I am giving myself this year. Love, Wynonna

The event will feature career reflections and readings from Mansfield; live performances by The WannaBeatles, country star Wynonna, contemporary Christian artist Phil Keaggy, country star David Ball, and other celebrity guests; and the presentation of a proclamation by Metro Councilman Parker Toler naming Jan. 30 as Nashville Beatles Music Day. He revisits the landscapes of success and excess in his new book, Between Wyomings: My God and an iPod on the Open Road. Published by Thomas Nelson, the book recalls the musical icons, pop stars, wild men, and troubled souls he encountered, including The Beatles and Waylon Jennings. In his third book, he sees with the eyes of a Christian, searching the geography of his life for insights into grace and redemption. The event is sponsored by Thomas Nelson, Orangethread Media, Seale Keyworks, Soundcheck, Sam Ash, WSIX¬FM, IPT, The Red House, and Whiting Publicity & Promotions. "W.O. Smith is excited to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the Sgt. "We are thrilled to be part of this special event that pays tribute to a band that continues to influence and amaze those of us who grew up as Beatles fans and an entire new generation of students who are exploring and being profoundly affected 40 years later." Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the British rock band The Beatles. Recorded over a 129-day period beginning on Dec. 6, 1966, the album was released on June 1, 1967 in the United Kingdom and the following day in the United States. Sgt. Pepper is often described as The Beatles' magnum opus and recognized as one of the most influential albums of all time by prominent critics and publications. It was ranked the greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003. "Everything changed with The Beatles," said two-time Grammy winner Dennis Scott, who sings and plays guitar for The WannaBeatles. "Then in ‘67 they recorded Sergeant Pepper, and everything changed again. The WannaBeatles and I are humbled and honored to be part of Nashville’s celebration of their music." The Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County recently voted to approve Councilman Parker Toler's proclamation to name Jan. 30 as Nashville Beatles Music Day. Toler introduced the bill after The WannaBeatles performed on the roof of Rippy's nightclub on Broadway to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' legendary rooftop performance in London. The proclamation cites The WannaBeatles and the MENC: National Association for Music Education for helping to raise public awareness about The Beatles' contributions to music education.

Rodney Atkins celebrated the number one success of “It’s America” yesterday in Nashville on Music Row with a celebration of friends and industry insiders. With school out, his son Elijah was right by his side during the party. One of Rodney’s goals for the summer is to spend a lot of time with his family and he’s had a lot of fun doing so thus far. “Stuff I remember with my dad and my parents is the goofy stuff we did together. And that’s the stuff we’re trying to keep in mind with Elijah this summer is doing just the silly stuff. I’m still sore right now from us getting on the slip-n-slide yesterday doing a Pete Rose. But yeah, that’s the kind of stuff we’re doing. Just hanging out.” Other things Rodney and Elijah like to do together is play pool and go fishing. --CMT Daily Roundup for 06-02-09
Rodney says he wants to build a long and healthy performing career. The singer describes what he's striving for as, quote, “Garth meets Springsteen,” and notes that he's working toward this goal by developing solid, music-driven concerts. Atkins will be back on the road next week. He's out supporting his latest CD, "It's America," which features the chart-topping title track and his new single, "15 Minutes." Atkins' next show will be in Fargo, North Dakota on June 4th. -- Westwood One
